How do I decongest my nose for Functional Breathwork

Before you begin any Breathwork exercises, you might have to decongest your nose.

No problem:

Here’s how to Clear Your Nose

First up, let's check which side of your nose feels more stuffed. Block one nostril with a finger and take a breath in through the other. Then switch sides and repeat. Easy peasy!

Now, to clear that congestion, here's what you'll do:

  1. Breathe in and out through your nose like you normally would.

  2. Pinch your nose shut with your fingers.

  3. While holding your breath, move your body gently or nod your head up and down.

  4. Hold your breath until you feel a good urge to take in air.

  5. Release your nose and breathe calmly through it.

  6. Repeat this six times, taking a short 30-60 second break between each round.

Feel the relief as you give your nose a little workout!

Breath Hold Caution: Just a heads up, this exercise involves holding your breath until you really feel like you need to breathe. Not recommended for folks with high or low blood pressure, anxiety, panic disorder, heart issues, or during pregnancy.

  • Duration Tip: For best results, aim to hold your breath for at least 30 seconds.

  • Bonus Benefits: This exercise can also help clear out lung mucus and even ease constipation. Double win!

  • Nasal Help: If your nostrils are on the narrow side, consider using Breathe Right strips or a nasal dilator at bedtime. (Check out NasalDilator.com for options.)

  • Extra Step: If your nose still feels stuffy, try six rounds of Exercise 5 (Steps) to really kick that congestion to the curb.

  • Breathing Check: After doing both exercises, see if you can breeze through a whole minute of nose breathing. If you can nail that, you're set for life!

Keep these tips handy for a clear-breathing game plan!
