Does Breathwork Really Work?
Are you constantly striving towards happiness and contentment and balance on the never-ending hamster wheel?
Only to get the things we always strived for, and feeling more disconnected than ever? Sometimes, our bodies let us down, we start to feel unwell in body and mind, dysfunction sets in - a kind of kink in the chain.
Have you lost your sense of sense play? Do you find yourself in survival mode day after day, wondering where the old you has gone?
If you feel you “have” to do ALL OF THE THINGS to help you feel better on a daily basis, but have no extra time to add more stuff to your heaving to-do list
You reach for solutions - mindfulness, HRT, high intensity exercise, but without truly understanding the body’s signals, you are not tuning in to what your body is telling you.
That’s where breathwork comes in….
Simple, easy-to-follow breathing methods can recalibrate our nervous systems, teaching your body and mind how to function, focus, perform better than you can ever imagine.
Functional Breathwork is a practice that focuses on consciously controlling our breathing patterns.
So you may or may not know that there is an entire synchronicity that goes on within the body, and that involves your chemistry, it affects your biomechanics, it involves your brain function, and it has a significant impact on breathing and breathing has a major effect on it.
When you breathe, the way you breathe and the kind of quality of breath that you take have a massive impact on things like the PH level of your blood, the biochemistry of your blood, the function of your diaphragm, the muscles in your thorax (show thorax), the posture you hold, the way you deal with stress, your organ health, your heart health, your digestive system, your sleep, the way you exercise, your mental wellness, your immune system, your emotional wellness….
Breathwork underpins the entire structure and the entire scaffolding of those systems.
Every function within the body in some shape or form is impacted and affected by breath.
Having a better function of breathing and breath pattern is a basic function of wellness. And so if you are what we would call a dysfunctional breather or your breath pattern and the way that you breathe isn't particularly functional, then it's going to have some level of impact on your emotional and physical wellbeing,
So it's vital that you understand breathing as much as you understand that brushing your teeth daily is part of oral health.
How Breathwork Works
Breathwork influences so many aspects of our wellbeing by engaging different physiological processes:
Nervous System Regulation: Breathwork activates the parasympathetic nervous system (responsible for rest and relaxation) while suppressing the sympathetic nervous system (responsible for the fight-or-flight response). This regulation promotes relaxation and reduces stress hormone levels.
Respiratory Function Improvement: Conscious breathing exercises can strengthen the diaphragm and increase lung capacity, resulting in better oxygen intake and carbon dioxide elimination.
Emotional Processing: Focusing on our breath and its patterns can help individuals gain insight into unresolved emotions or negative beliefs, leading to increased emotional well-being and personal growth.
Enhanced Mental Clarity: Deep, controlled breathing can increase blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain, resulting in improved cognitive function and concentration.
Immune System Support: Breathwork can positively impact the immune system by reducing stress, improving circulation, and promoting relaxation.
